Sense orb

Digital platforms are already integrated into our every waking minute—now they’re moving into our sleep. A spate of apps and devices aim to aid and facilitate better sleep, from ambient lamps to a lucid dreaming sleep mask to an app that wakes you up with a phone call from a stranger.

The latest example is Sense, a sleek orb (think bird’s nest meets snowball) that measures light, temperature, humidity and noise to help you optimize your sleep environment. The device comes with a small “sleep pill” that clips to your pillow to track overnight tossing and turning, delivering results via its accompanying app. After an uber-successful Kickstarter campaign, Sense is now shipping in the U.S., with the U.K. to follow early next year.

As researchers continue to link a healthy sleep cycle with overall health and wellness, watch for more attempts to create a “gorgeous, bespoke, artisanally handcrafted good night’s sleep.” —Hallie Steiner
